Encintas, CA "Streetscape" Project 

Below are some examples of the Encinitas, CA "Streetscape" CommuniCan project. The City of Encinitas underwent a mjor renovation of the entire downtown area including sponsorship fund-matching for 16 CommuniCan works placed in prominent intersections and gathering places. Each CommuniCan holds a 36-gallon trash receptacle and features four tile murals created by local high school students. These kiln-fired tiles are glued and grouted and last a lifetime without fading, cracking, scratching, or loosening.

North County "Coastal CommuniCan" Project 

The Coastal CommuniCan project worked with K-12 students in the Encinitas, CA school district as well as local artists to create tiles and murals for 25 CommuniCans which are installed at 8 popular beaches and coastal parks in Encinitas.

"Essence of Encinitas" Project, City Hall, Encintas, CA

Local artsist of all ages created 12" x 12" ceramic tile murals which were fired and affixed on 30 bollards (concrete columns) outside the Encinitas City Hall complex along with a number of CommuniCans. A total of 35 permanent works are installed. 

First CommuniCan Projects

The very first CommuniCans, formerly called "EnviroCans," were created by students at Teen Quest in San Diego, CA (a high school for homeless kids) and Sunset High School in Encinitas, CA (a school for at-risk youth). The existing receptacles were located along Coast Highway 101 and in parks in Downtown San Diego and Encinitas and were "recycled" giving them a new life as functional works of community art.

Moonlight Beach CommuniTable Project, Encinitas, CA

Three concrete picnic tables at Moonlight beach suffered from continual grafiti. After these tiles murals were installed the problem no longer existed. 

Big Bay project, Embarcadero Park, San Diego, CA

These five concrete benches in Embarcadero Park were done in partnership with the San Diego Children's Museum and the San Diego Port Authority.

"EnviroSculpture" Enviromental Sculpture Educational Program

Our Environmental Sculpture or “EnviroSculpt” class is designed to give students hands on experience in sculpture while teaching them about environmental issues. This program has proven to have an immediate and lasting impact on the students causing them to see the trash that their family generates in a whole new light. Students often report involving the rest of the family in their project.
