What goes into a CommuniCan?

Some see a trash can simply as a receptacle for refuse. We see the trash receptacle as a canvas for public art, an opportunity for community collaboration, and a way to get kids involved in the arts, community action and environmental beautification.

Our new CommuniCan is an attractive and sturdy metalframe which holds a trash can inside. The sides are made up of metal panels, or “pans,” in which painted and fired ceramic tiles and murals are inlaid and then grouted. The finished pans are then fastened to the frame of the bin from the inside.

With this new and exclusive design the panels are not only replaceable, they are also suitable for public wall display in a gallery setting. And not only do the tile murals look great, but they actually act as a graffiti deterrent.

You can sponsor a CommuniCan or similar tile mural project for $1,000. Your donation includes your organization’s name on the receptacle, as well as lessons, tiles, paint and brushes, and installation.
